Patent Attorney Position

Patent attorneys at Knox Patents must be familiar with the electrical and mechanical arts. Although the firm's focus is on patent prosecution, patent lawyers at Knox Patents work in all areas of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

What does it take to be a good patent attorney or agent? A love for writing. An inquisitive mind. A mechanical or technical bend. Some of the most successful patent attorneys are those who, as a youngster, enjoyed tearing things apart to find out how they worked. That is, someone who has an inquisitive mind. For another example, consider how some use a dictionary. Many with an inquisitive mind use a dictionary to look up one word, and, a half hour later, put the dictionary away after having read the definitions of many other words. The search for one bit of information leads an inquisitive mind on a journey that does not always stop when that one bit is discovered.

Candidates must be very familiar with computers and be comfortable using a word processor, Adobe Acrobat, and e-mail. Candidates must either already be a member of the patent bar or be eligible to sit for the patent bar exam. Technical Illustrator Position

Technical illustrators at Knox Patents prepare the figures accompanying patent applications. The position is a part-time position with flexible hours and scheduling. The technical illustrator position is ideal for a freelance graphic artist who wishes to work as an independent contractor.

The ideal candidate should have some understanding of mechanics. That is, candidates should have a basic understanding of how things work and how they fit together. Patent drawings are line art drawings that are not to scale. Patent drawings are intended to symbolically illustrate the invention in a patent. The technical illustrator will work from rough pencil sketches, prototypes, photographs, and catalogs to create these drawings. Basically, a patent attorney will sketch what needs to be drawn, and the illustrator will make it look "pretty" and "professional," that is, with straight lines, smooth curves, etc. The ideal candidate will have a technical background. A requirement for the position is experience with a vector-graphic program such as Adobe Illustrator or Xara Xtreme.
